Our vision for the future is to train all of our breeding ladies to serve as wheelchair assistance dogs in honor of my husband Matt’s daily struggle with life as a quadriplegic.
Upon breeding retirement (approximately at age 5), our girls will be donated to appropriate, approved people who will benefit from owning an assistance dog.
Downunder's Scooby Doodle Doo is our first Doodle on Duty. We hope to add more Duty Doodles in the future.
Below are some of Scooby's triumphs and our challenges...
Besides learning basic obedience commands such as "Sit", "Down" and "Stay", Scooby was lying quietly under tables in restaurants by 3 months and pushing automatic door buttons at 5 months old .
By 6 months, Scooby could retrieve any object Matt dropped and gently place it in Matt's lap.
At 9 months, Scooby could retrieve items from shelves in the grocery store and by 12 months Scooby could open doors, refrigerators, and could assist in removing Matt's shirt, pants and socks.
He is so eager to learn anything new that he practically teaches himself!
He has always been an absolute gem in public settings (besides being a "famous celebrity" in our hometown of Sanford, Scooby has been to Colorado and stayed for a week with us in the middle of Times Square)! Our biggest challenge is people petting Scooby while he is working. For those of you who don't know: "Please Do Not Pet Working Dogs!"
People will pet him and make a fuss over him without permission and Scooby being such the love muffin that he is, enjoys the attention so much that it often takes him "off-task".
It is so difficult for us to say "No" to people who do ask permission to pet Scooby. It is a task with which we continually struggle. We are so proud of him and we want everyone to be able to feel his coat of fleece (if you've never touched an Australian Labradoodle with its unique fleece coat, it is truly a unique experience)!
Ironically, the great thing about Scooby's unique appearance is that we are asked questions about him everywhere we go and we are constantly able to promote the Australian Labradoodle breed!
